Oh, Comm 465…

Well, first, I want to point out that Dr. Z was not kidding when he said this class was going to be very difficult and extremely time consuming – it was exactly that.

Every aspect of production for every assignment in this class took forever and it was very detail-oriented. Also, all the aspects of this class were new to me. I had never created a news package before or used any of the equipment and it was a really great, but really difficult, learning experience. At the beginning of the course, I didn’t even know what Adobe Premiere was and now I could use it with my eyes closed. I am definitely more marketable in my field now that I have more experience (or at least knowledge) on all the equipment that professionals use.

Dr. Z is a great guy and his experience and wisdom are great. Sometimes it’s hard to understand just how much Dr. Z knows because I know so little! I really enjoyed how understanding Dr. Z was. He knows that things happen in life and he is so great with understanding that we are so inexperienced and new at this and we need some time to learn how to manage everything.

The course, in general, provided a lot of information. I’m definitely glad it’s a requirement and I enjoyed that we were able to learn everything from equipment to statistics about the job market and ways to make ourselves better job candidates. Those are things that you don’t learn everyday in the classroom.

Comm 465 was definitely a really hard time for me though. Everything that could’ve went wrong, did! Whether it was losing my SD card, my footage, having bad equipment, losing sound, EVERYTHING. I definitely learned a lot and it went outside the classroom. I learned the importance of being prepared and having a plan A, B, C, D, and even E because technology and the business of journalism are very tricky. I learned how incredibly unlucky I am but I also learned that luck has nothing to do with success.

As soon as I hand in my final project, I will take a VERY BIG breath of relief because I am extremely proud of myself for making it through this course, which I once thought I would not be able to. Thank you to Dr. Z for putting up with my absurd bad luck and for spending all that time in office hours trying to make me a better student and a better journalist.

Cheers!
